Veterans Day 2017 is Saturday, November 11th.

This Saturday, November 11, 2017 is Veterans Day across America. This will mark the 99th year of Americans remembering those who served our country in uniform. The day was first known as Armistice Day, and then, since 1954 as Veterans Day. Because it is the 99th year of commemoration, the Department of Veterans Affairs has broadened the tradition of observances and appreciation to include both Veterans and Military Families for the entire month of November.

In Washington D.C. the Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony starts precisely at 11 am with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the united States Armed Forces.

Here in Milwaukee on November 11th there will be two opportunities for you to honor those who served. The American Legion will hold its annual ceremony at 10:30 am at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, and at 5 pm the annual Veterans Day Banquet will be held in Memorial Hall at the Center which is located at 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee.

Also, make sure to check out the flags at the Wisconsin Memorial Park located at 13235 W. Capitol Drive in Brookfield.

In addition to these ways, the most important thing one can do to honor veterans is to THANK THEM for their service. It has always amazed me how surprised they appear when I thank them, so it's clear to me that it's not done often enough. All veterans deserve our undying gratitude for the sacrifices they have made for our country.
