Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thanksgiving, the national holiday that started as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest, is now much more than that as we gather with family and friends to begin our holiday season.

Thanksgiving, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, as determined by federal legislation in 1941, has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1963 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States. Historically, it was to celebrate the harvest but since most of us aren't farmers we see it as something completely different.

Today, we use the day to eat and eat and eat some more. Sure, some of the weekend warriors get out to organize their version of the Turkey Bowl, but for the most of us we are too busy trying to digest our food and watch the NFL. Everyone has their favorites be it the turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, or dessert. We all tend to over indulge. There is just no getting around it. It's just plain fun to have an excuse.

Triple A has projected that over 50 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, which is a 3.3 percent increase over last year. That means that the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday weekend will see the highest travel volume since 2005 with 1.6 million more people taking to the nation's roads, skies, rails, and waterways. The travel period starts on Wednesday, November 22nd and extends to Sunday, November 26th. Thanksgiving is the kick off of the busy holiday season which will continue until after the start of 2018.

So, enjoy lots and travel safe. We here at Sinclair Broadcasting's CW18 & My24 wish the very best for you and your family. Let's close out the year with a culinary bang -- we can worry about our waistlines in 2018!!
